Simon's Story

Hi, I'm not a doctor, and you should follow your doctor's advice about diet and medicine, but here's my story...

I found out I had UC about two years ago when suddenly I couldn't leave my bathroom. Anything I ate went right through me and blood was also coming out, which was freaking me out. So, I went to the doctors had some tests done that nobody should have to go though, you all know what I'm talking about. The first one they did said it would only last a minute, so I opted to not be put asleep. WARNING: TELL THEM TO PUT YOU TO SLEEP! It was the longest 60 second of my life. The second time they needed to stick that camera up there so I was knocked out. Anyway after that hell, they told me I had ulcerative colitis.

My doctor said I could eat whatever I wanted, and prescribed 400mg of Asacol to me. I was supposed to take 2 pills 3 times a day before meals. It actually worked very well for me, and I was back to normal, but if I got off those pills I was locked in the bathroom again. You can visit the Asacol website here. They actually have a whole lot of useful information about the disease.

Anyway about 6 months ago I lost my health plan. The pills are very expensive without a prescription plan. They are like $1 a pill, and I had to take 6 a day. So that's $6 every single day for medicine and I couldn't afford it. So I went on the internet and started doing some research. I was looking at the diets and nuts are supposed to be very hard to digest and I did notice some problems when I ate them, so I cut those out. But I was really looking for some supplements I could take. I read that aloe vera capsules, and fish oil capsule help with the disease, among some other ones that I can't remember right now. So, I went to my local GNC store, picked up a couple bottle and replaced with my medicine. And so far so good. Six months later and I'm doing fine. I know without a doubt that this WILL NOT work for everyone, but it may work for a couple of you, that can't afford the medicine like me.
