Connie's Story
Hi, I am 40 years old. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1998, after being misdiagnosed by 2 other doctors. I am a nurse but these docs had me thinking I was CRAZY. The abdominal bloating and discomfort, bleeding mucus, going to the bathroom all the time. It was really beginning to depress me. The first doctor told me I had hemorrhoids, (even after the colonoscopy). The second doc told me, well I was not there, just follow what your other doctor told you to do. Then finally I found a doctor, after another year and a half, that would finally get me straightened out. I had a great four years, symptom free after getting started on Asacol & a taper down of steroids. I decided to decrease my meds on my own and not follow up with my Gasto. BIG MISTAKE!!! Last year I had a flare up and ended up in the hospital. Developed Diabetes from all the steroids.
I am now on a diabetic diet, taking ALL my meds as prescribed and doing much better. I found that no one thing works for everybody, you just have to experiment until you find what works for you. STRESS plays a big part of you mental & physical heath. I have the loving support of my wonderful husband and son to keep me going, and a lot of PRAYER. I am still having small flare up by keep in close contact with my Gastro, try to eat right and keep my stress level under control (which is sometimes hard to do, the medical field is very stressful). Good luck to all that have this disease, for it is difficult to deal with sometimes.
Thank-you.
