Gail's Story

Hi there, my name is Gail and I too was a UC patient. 1998 was the year it started. The stomache pain, bloody bm's, my energy level practically gone, all over night. I never had a problem or sign of this coming on. One day, bang, it hit me.

The doctors had a hard time to figure out what was wrong with me, they would rehydrate me at the hospital and send me home. Finally they sent me for the "scopes" and it was diagnosed.

I spent 4 weeks in the hospital on IV, taking the drugs(Asacol, metro, prednisone) and being monitored.

After being released from the hospital I had a prescription list as long as the sheet of paper it was written on. I walked out of the drug store with $700 dollars worth of drugs.

This didn't work out well for me. I didn't like the side effects(hair loss, moon face, moody), so after about three more hospitalizing flareups and 40lbs gone I went to my family doctor and asked for a second opinion.

I was refered to a doctor in Saint John NB, who knew just by looking at my weak frame that I needed help ASAP. We talked about the surgery and I did not hesitate at all. He informed me all about it, let me know all the ins and outs, and he really believed this was the right choice for me. I thought about the fact that I would't have to take any more pills, and that this doctor really knew what was going on.

I had the surgery in 2000, and after having the "bag" for four months , I went back in and got the bag off and my small intestine reconnected(my whole large intestine was removed).

I consider myself fully recovered! Never a flare up, I eat anything I want, I have total control again!! My average time in the bathroom now is 2-3 times a day!!

I will always remember this doctor as my saviour!! Gail
