Sarah's Story
My name is Sarah, I read Beck's Story. How you must have suffered over the last 10 years trying to raise 4 children and deal with UC symptoms. I am married, no children to take care of, and it is all I can do to get to work sometimes. I am so very sorry to hear that you may be looking at surgery. I am sure you have already thought of this but you must get another opinion. I understand your fear. I am also looking at the prospect of surgery. I believe they call it a Proctocolectomy.
I am in my 4 decade of UC and the fear is cancer. What are they recommending for you? An ileostomy? I had an ileostomy when I was 18. I managed quite well once I got past the learning curve. I had the ileostomy for two years (to allow healing of the remaining bowel and rectum) before they were able to reconnect. I have suffered with moderate to severe symptoms ever since...except for a long period of remission. I smoked for about 20 years and had very few episodes during the time I smoked. Since I quite about 6 years ago I have been in and out of doctors offices and taken almost all the drugs used to treat UC. I have been through good doctors and bad doctors. Doctors that seem to lose interest when they cannot get me into remission. I am 56 years old now and would welcome surgery after all the years of up and downs with UC. I have some research to do before I agree to the surgery that is why I am on this website today.
I am looking for others who have had a proctocolectomy. I live in the Palmdale, CA area. My doctor recommended two doctors: Dr. Beart (?) at USC and Dr. Robert Fursin at Huntington Memorial in Pasadena (or Arcadia). Does anyone know of these Doctors or have you had experience with them.
