Natalie's Story
Hi! My name is Natalie. I'm 32 years old. I was diagnosed with UC while I was 8 months pregnant. The doctors put me on a 5ASA drug called Dipentum. It worked for a little while, until the baby was about 6 weeks old. Then all of a sudden the drug caused me to have pancreatitis. (1-2% chance it can cause that). They took me off the drug and it sent me into a full fledge flare up. I had to be hospitalized for 17 days. While in the hospital, I was given a PIC line where they fed me TPN, Flagil, Cipro, and Prednisone. After 7 days, nothing had worked. They called me a "therapy failure". Next they tried Cyclosporin combined with 6MP. So far it's been working (7 days). I'll be treated with the cyclosporin for 8 weeks. The doctors say if this doesn't work, I'll have to have my colon removed. I'm not going to thing about that at this point.
It's been really difficult with having a new baby and this disease. I really want to learn more about how and if diet effects flare ups. There seems to be a lot of controversy over it. I'm also really interested in learning more about probiotics and if anyone uses them to help. I'm really eager to learn everything I can to make myself better. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Wilmington, NC USA
