Vicky's Story
I have recently been diagnosed with UC & have had a pretty rough time trying
to find a medication that my body can tolerate. The first three I have been
unable to live with the side effects eg hair loss, fatigue, rashes,
bleeding, to name a few. When told to take the 4th type of medication I was
told that some of the side effects are white blood cell reduction, can
affect your bone marrow, hair loss, rashes, more prone to skin cancer,
pancreatitis, etc etc etc! I declined medication. I am taking fish oil,
probiotics, multi vitamins, am visiting a dietician who has great knowledge
of UC, visiting a councillor, still see my specialist ( to monitor the
disease - I think he is waiting for me to change my mind). Maybe later on
down the track I will need to change my mind but I am not ready for that
yet.
I have had this disease for at least 5 years & have lived with the flare ups
occassionally. A gluten free diet for the last 4 years has helped
enormously. My father has coelic disease so I thought this was my problem
too. The benefits have helped me lead a happy, mostly normal life.
I am learning to meditate & take time out for me on a regular basis as the
common thread with peoples stories has been that stress causes flare ups.
I don't know whether I am making the right choise or not but I will let you
know later on.
I hope someone gets a little relief from the worry of this disease by my
sharing my story with you. I know I did by reading everyone elses stories.
