Sally's Story

Hi, My name is Sally and live in Penrith NSW, Australia. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis when I was 19. I am now 25 turning 26. As most of you know it can be hard work sometimes and just so tiring.

I usually get at least 2 flare ups a year and 1 hospital admission a year also. I know that there are people allot worse off than me but when you have a flare up and feeling rotten you can not think of anything else.

I recently had a flare up so I was pumped full of steroids and am also taking Salazopyrin. I notice a change almost immediately after taking the steroids but I hate taking them as they make my face fat and they can't be good for you.

Usually when my UC is bad I get flu type symptoms, usually lose a bit of weight, diahreer constantly, lots of blood, really bad stomach cramps and I know this sounds grose but my bottom burns. It gets to the point where I can hardly wipe it its so sore.

I also noticed that the cold effects me needing to go the toilet. I have to keep warm and not eat really big meals as I find that I need to go to the toilet almost immediately. When I used to work in a bakery and walked to work it would be about 4:30am in the morning, I always had to have toilet paper with me and go behind a tree. I have also had plenty of accidents which is pretty awful and humiliating.

I am getting married at the end of October 2007 and that worries me alot. Nerves make me want to go to the toilet and walking down the aisle, what happens if I need to go???

My fiancé tries really hard to understand but I know he gets frustrated. No one really understands except for us. I know that they will never fully comprehend what happens to our bodies. I was so healthy before all this and now I have got never ending problems. I have arthritis and recently got a steroid injection in my arthritic coxics bone. Man did that hurt. I get little rashes, I'm always tired, depressed and very emotional.

I recently decided that I am going to speak to my specialist about getting my colon out. Then I wouldn't have to worry about cancer as much and what I eat all the time. Wouldn't have to worry where there is a toilet either. I just don't think I can bare the thought of having this for the rest of my life. When I decide to have children, I can only imagine having morning sickness on top of a flare up of UC.

Foods that irritate my UC are nuts, spicy food, grainy bread, legumes(lentils, red kidney beans), celery and really fibreous foods. I can not drink alcohol anymore and cigarettes are a definant no no. Porridge is an excellent food to eat and bananas.

It's great to read others peoples stories. I feel like I am not as alone.
