Tori's Story

Hi. I'm a 15 year old girl just recently diagnosed with UC, I think it's been about 6 months now. This whole process has definitely turned my life upside down. Here I go from a red meat and junkfood (mountain dew!) loving teenager, rarely getting sick or anything, and all of a sudden, whammo! I'm passing blood. I gotta say, that part was one of the scariest. So I feel like an icepick is being dragged through my stomach and I'm passing blood, and I go to the doctor, who has no clue what's going on.

They check me for hemmoroids (or however you spell it) and send me on my way. But it's getting worse. Now I'm passing blood several times a day, and I'm in constant pain. (to the point where I missed school because I was in so much pain I couldn't walk without panting and whining, and trust me, I NEVER do that).

I go to another doctor who asks for a zillion stool samples (which idk about you guys, but it isnt exactly a basket of roses to do, but also it's wayy embarrassing when you know what they're gonna see inside). Still, after doing all that, all they could tell me was I'm clean for parasites and I'm bleeding out my behind.

So finally, my mom can't take it anymore, we go to a GE, who tells us I should get a colonoscopy/whatever when they stick a camara down your throat, too. I do (which, again, was NOT my idea of a good time) and they show me pictures of my colon while I was still loopy from the anesthesia, so I wasn't paying much attention, until my doctor said I have the colon of a 60 year old and a deseise called ulcerative colitis.

I looked it up and cut my diet (of all the best tasting foods ever) but they had already prescribed 40mg of prednisone a day. My symptoms improved immediately, but I started getting really really bad "moon face". As a teenage girl, that affected my self esteem a lot, and that ended up as a gateway to a lot of psychological side effects common with prednisone (for example, I'm a pretty positive person all the time, but on prednisone I was very snappy and sad a lot).

The prednisone pretty much ruled my life for two or three months. I was moody, unmotivated, I started distancing myself from people, it was bad. One day, I missed a dose (20mg dose), and a few hours later passed out. That scared my mom a lot so we talked to my doctor about weaning me off, and we did. She also prescribed me pentasa, the most gentle horse-sized pill I've ever taken. I also started taking aloe supplements, which help A LOT. and that's about where I'm at right now.

One cause of UC that doctors predict is stress, which I definitely agree with that statement. I've had a bunch of experiences that not many people I also think it's hereditary because my dad's aunt or sonething has it too.
