Danny's Story
I first had ulcerative colitis at the age of 30 confined to just the rectal area. I took steroids for six weeks and azulfidine for two years and it went into resession for 20 years. At the age of 50 I had a real bad flair up loosing thirty pounds, diherrea and no appetite. Went to a surgeon for a colonoscopy and was told that the entire left side of my colon was affected and was put on asecol. I took the medicine for over four years with very little improvement. Continued weight loss and loss of appetite. I thought it was stress related from my job. At the age of 54 I had type A influenza twice with pneumonia and strep throat and missed work about seven days each time. Then I started having lack of energy and continuous weight loss and cramping. I continuied to work until I noticed bloody stools with mucas and diherrea. I finally got so weak I couldn't stay on my feet. I went to the ER in a lot of pain.
They ran a CT scan and said my colon had a lot of
inflammation and was given morphine IV for pain and sent home with steroids and pain meds. I had already scheduled an appointment with a Gastro. Specialist. Two days later I went to the specialist to set up the colonoscopy. One week later I had the colonoscopy only to find out that entire colon was effected. Now I have chronic pain, cramps, nausea and fatigue. I'm now back on the steroids, azulfidine, folic acid, pain meds and nausea meds. I have missed six weeks of work and Im still not 100%. I was told that the surgeon had put me on the wrong medicine now for over four years. The steroids have kept me from sleeping now for a month. My primary care physician put me on ambien to sleep. I now average four hours of sleep a night. My advise is to choose a Gastro. Specialist you like and have regular check ups and a scheduled colonoscopy every year. In my case the disease has only worsen.
