Stephen's Story
I am British, 27 and I have had ulcerative colitis for 2 years. I had IBS
for about 3 months to begin with. It started after some unaccustomed
excercise, when I was drinking water from dirty hands.
Last Christmas my condition worsened and I decided their must be some truth
in that diet affects it. My doctor said that their was no cure and even
after I specifically asked about diet I was told just to eat healthily.
After the excess' of Christmas I found a site that recommended a book: 'The
self help way to treat Colitis and other IBS conditions' by De Lamar Gibbons
MD
I cut out fructose (fruit sugar), lactose (dairy sugar) and wheat (as best
as possible) and literally within 3-4 days my incontinence improved
massively. You can imagine my fury with the advice of the NHS. Over the next
month I still had problems with bloating and wind. I re-read the book and
cut down on alot of raw vegtables and other fibres. The result is
inconsistent but generally better and I have halved my intake of Asacol to 3
tablets a day. I take vitamin supplements. I also tried some Yerba Mate tea
and taking friendly bacteria tablets but didnt really notice any difference.
Caffeine is bad for people with ulcers because of its diruretic effect. I
think this goes also for excess fibre which irrates the colon. Same for
spicy food etc. Sugery food makes me jittery which also seems to send me
rushing to the loo. The stress factor is still a mystery to me.
Generally ,it makes more sense now and I feel more in control of a disease
which seemed inexplicable.
